What this session covered.

Session 1 focused on immediate action rather than passive introduction. Participants were placed into teams and given a real problem to solve, with limited time and no preparation. The aim was to push founders into thinking quickly, collaborating effectively, and communicating ideas under pressure.

Purpose

The session was designed to introduce the cohort to the programme by making them engage straight away. Rather than easing participants in slowly, it established from day one that Innovation Labs @ BCU is built around action, structure, and real problem-solving.

Focus

Students were encouraged to work under pressure, think clearly as a team, and communicate solutions with confidence. The focus was not only on ideas, but on how founders respond when asked to act quickly and present clearly.

How the session ran.

The session was intentionally designed to remove comfort and force immediate engagement.

No warm up

There were no slides or extended introductions. Participants were expected to engage from the moment the session began.

Real problem

Each team was given a real-world problem and had to identify a clear pain point before building a potential solution.

Timed pressure

Teams had 30 minutes to develop their idea and send one person to present it to the room.

Outcome

The session created exactly the kind of energy expected from the programme. Founders were pushed to think fast, communicate clearly, and begin building momentum from day one. Cohort I is already moving.

A strong and energetic start to the programme. This session was highly interactive, with participants taking part in the £100K Challenge. Teams worked together to identify real problems, develop ideas quickly, and present their solutions, setting the tone for the rest of the programme.
